Canadian rock duo Japandroids have blown up this year behind the strength of their second album, Celebration Rock. And deservedly so, as the album’s energetic 35 minutes and eight songs provide some of the heaviest rock-filled moments of the year. In the latest episode of The Hivecast With Matt Pinfield, guitarist/vocalist Brian King and drummer David Prowse tell Matt about finding their footing in the Victoria, British Columbia indie rock scene and why everybody looked up to Frog Eyes/Swan Lake’s Carey Mercer.

“Frog Eyes was one of the big guns of the local music scene in Victoria,” they said. “They kind of seemed right on the cusp of being a real band, kind-of-sort-of famous, and yet still lived in town and you could still go see them play regularly. I don’t know if you could hear an influence, per se, in our records from their records, but just as far as being able to see someone who you could see around town walking around on the street, seeing them perform the caliber they were performing, writing the kinds of songs they were, was kind of — you wanted to be your own version of that.” Japandroids achieved all that and more — check out the rest of the Hivecast to hear how they got there and what else they learned along the way. [Download & subscribe to the Hivecast via iTunes.
